Phyllis J. Howell

Phyllis Joan Howell (nee Carrozza, Adler) died peacefully on September 4, 2017, after a courageous battle with complications from Oral Cancer in Alexandria, Virginia. She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey at home on January 4, 1930.

Phyllis is predeceased by her husband Phillip in 2013, Ralph N. Carrozza in 1973 and daughter Barbara E. Carrozza.  She is survived by her child, Carol C. Richards; her grandson Devon W. Richards, son-in-law William L. Richards, her sister Diane C. Bryant, niece Marianne E. Bryant, nephew Donald R. Bryant, her grandnieces Sarah M. and Amanda E. Bryant and grandnephew Ryan J. Bryant. She will also be missed by other family members  and friends including her in-laws Karenmarie Bryant and John Bryant as well as cousins Alice Niekrasz, Elizabeth Cox, John Flynn and dear friends from Wells, New York, Englewood, Florida and the Hermitage in Alexandria, Virginia.

When Ralph Carrozza returned from World War II, Phyllis and Ralph married in Bayonne, New Jersey on June 5, 1948 and raised two daughters, Barbara and Carol. When the youngest, Carol,  started school Phyllis returned to work and ultimately became an office manager at Hess Brothers Construction Company in Sayreville, NJ, which she retired from after 30 years.  When Ralph died her daughters were grown and she married Phillip G. Howell.  She and Phillip enjoyed many years traveling the world, being involved in senior social activities and living the good life in upstate New York and ultimately Englewood Florida. She thoroughly enjoyed entertaining, having tea parties, being President of the local Garden Club in Englewood and participating in activities at the Englewood United Methodist Church. She moved to the Hermitage in June of 2013 and enjoyed the many friendships she developed, attending musicals and concerts with her daughter and friend Peg, and playing cards with her new found friends. The Hermitage was home for Mom.  She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and her grandson Devon who was the “light of her life”.

A celebration of Phyllis’s life will be held at The Hermitage, 5000 Fairbanks Avenue, Alexandria, VA on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Kathy Howell officiating.
