Gary Matviak, 72, a former resident of Westfield, NJ, and Glenmoor in Palmer Township, Pa, passed away in the Goodwin House, Alexandria, Virginia, on January 26 , 2018.
Born in Phillipsburg,NJ, on April 8, 1945, Mr Matviak is the son of George and Gertrude Andrews Matviak of Warren Glen, NJ., He is survived by Colleen Ford whom he married on December 28, 1968, daughter, Megan Mabry, and her husband, Dr Stephen Mabry , and beloved granddaughter Emma of Arlington, VA.
Mr Matviak was a member of the Phillipsburg High School Class of 1963, serving on its 50th reunion committee. After attending Mansfield State College, he was employed by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Federal Food Inspector for 38 years. He received service commendations for resuscitating the life of a plant employee while on assignment in Flemington, NJ, and also for his participation in the emergency food distribution during the massive New York City power blackout in 1977.
Gary Matviak served as a member of the New Jersey National Guard from 1967 to 1973. After retirement from the USDA in 2004, Mr Matviak volunteered at the New Jersey Veterans Home in Menlo Park, NJ. An avid skier, Mr Matviak enjoyed
the mountains of Pennsylvania , as well as traveling, sailing and swimming. He was a faithful participant in the historic Warren Glen ,NJ, annual picnic.
In addition, Mr Matviak is survived by his brother Gregory Matviak & wife, Carla, of Punta Gorda, FL, and two sisters: Ann Masenior & husband, Gary, of Washington , NJ, and
Susan Unangst & husband, Ronald ,of Easton, PA.
A private burial at the Sts Philip and James Cemetery will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.

We got to know you and Gary during our stay in Scotch Plains between 1978 and 1982 thanks to Active Acres where Olivia and Megan studied writing and reading !. We enjoyed your company and without your kind help and kindness our stay would not have been the same.
