Gary L. Bates was born on February 13, 1963 in Alexandria, Virginia. The Lord called him home on September 12, 2020 in his home alone. Gary grew up in the Old Town area of Alexandria. He was educated in Alexandria Public Schools and Graduated T.C Williams High School in 1981. Gary worked various jobs throughout his young life. His first job was at the age 12, he delivered the newspaper . He also worked for Alexandria City Public Schools system and for the past 10 years he work at Forest Glen Apartments Senior home. Gary loved his Job.
Gary is survived by his Mother Bessie Bates, his daughter Elisha Dixon, Granddaughter Hannah Dixon Gordon, and his Sister Betty (Bates) Brown. He is Survived by many Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. He is preceded in death by his father Onas (Ed) Bates, Sister Jackie Bates, Brothers Onas Jr. (Sam) & Tony Bates.
Gary became the heartbeat of the Family; no matter what he was always there to lend a helping hand and leaves behind nothing but beautiful Memories.

I’m so sorry for the loss of Gary. I’m truly going to miss him and the infectious way he could make everybody laugh no matter the circumstances. I think if he could have spoken at his own funeral he would find some way to make us laugh but also cry because he is absent from us. Rest In Peace my friend.
