Cynthia Ekstein, PhD. (Cindy)

Cynthia Ekstein, 64, died unexpectedly at her home in Arlington, Virginia on February 15, 2023 due to complications of Multiple Sclerosis. Born in Brockton Massachusetts to Joseph and Erica Ekstein, she graduated from Brockton High School and Stonehill College. She later went on to graduate from Tufts University, earning a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry.

From a very early age, Cindy was a talented and competitive figure skater and later competed in pairs with her brother to achieve national standing.

She began her career as a Materials Scientist at Raytheon, contributing to the Patriot and Trident Missile programs. She was recognized for her research by both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy for advances in Material Science where she was credited with several patents and recognized as first author in a number of publications.

Cindy later moved to Washington where she joined the National Science Foundation as a Program Manager in the Bioengineering and Environmental Systems Division.

Cindy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her late 20’s and retired from the NSF as a consequence of the disease’s progression. Because of advances in M.S. research Cindy was able to lead a productive life for many years after retirement. She was actively involved with civic issues in her Arlington neighborhood and county.

Cindy was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her brother and her beloved cats, Amore and Cleocatra. Contributions in Cindy’s memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the National Kitten Coalition.

She is truly missed by all who knew her.
