If I could leave 10 stars for Gary Maxwell and team, I would! My father, unfortunately, passed very suddenly and the Cunningham crew went above and beyond to ensure the best send-off for my Dad. Over a month later, I still receive compliments from attendees on how uplifting, seamless and well-executed the funeral arrangements were. But Gary and his team really SHINED throughout the process and post-service. Not only was our loss and grief sudden, but also complex. To put it lightly - we had tons of military/VA burial coordination and some not-so-kind step-family member/dynamics…all on an expedited timeline due to my siblings upcoming deployment. They remained patient, professional, focused and transparent. through it all. The ‘bedside manner’ towards everyone was unmatched!Chances are if you’re reading this, you’re probably (like myself) going though one of the toughest times of your life. Do yourself a favor, hire Cunningham - they really are stellar!read more

Following the passing of my husband on November 1st, 2023, my experience with Gary Maxwell the funeral director was incredibly disappointing and distressing a decision i deeply regret. The death of my husband should have been handled with sensitivity. This was an incredibly challenging time, and unfortunately, the services provided by Mr. Maxwell only added to the distress. His inconsistency throughout the process was unsettling. I expected a level of professionalism and compassion especially during such a sensitive time, but Mr. Maxwell fell short. What's worse as a surviving spouse, i felt completely excluded from the arrangements. It was as if my presence and input didn't matter at all.Despite being the surviving spouse, Mr. Maxwell made no efforts to ensure that my needs were met or that i was involved in the decision making process. To make matters worse, I was left to obtain the necessary death certificates on my own because he failed to do so a basic responsibility that should have been fulfilled by the funeral home. The passing of a loved one is a profoundly difficult experience, made even more unbearable by the lack of empathy, consistency and neglect of responsibilities demonstrated by Gary Maxwell and this funeral home. I wouldn't recommend their services to anyone seeking genuine care and professionalism during such a trying time.read more

Gary Maxwell and staff at Cunningham Turch made planning and executing a Celebration of Life for my son, Justin Smith, very comfortable and stress-free. The facilities are very nice, and the unexpected little details provided were exceptional. Their in-house graphics staff did a super job with photos, incorporating them into a video montage, guest registry book, and thank-you cards. Everything was accomplished smoothly, professionally, and exactly as Gary promised -- no surprises. The staff went out of their way to be helpful. My family and I were very pleased -- many kudos to the Cunningham Turch folks.read more

No matter the circumstances of the death of a loved one and no matter how prepared we may be in terms of having selected a funeral home and particular arrangements, when the time comes we are not ready for the eventuality and need help. It was no different for me, having lost a beloved mother at the age of 102 who was under hospice care. I sought Cunningham Turch because it performed traditional Jewish rituals, although the arrangements were anything but traditional. What was important is that my mother's wishes be honored, which they were in every respect. I would like to thank Clint Oxendine, who I contacted first, and Gary Maxwell, with whom he consulted, for seeing to it that the personalized arrangements requested could be made. Keith Hambright, the funeral director, was throughout, responsive to my queries in a kind and compassionate way. Keith was personable, putting me at ease just when I needed comfort the most. I think the greatest tribute is to say that my mother would have really liked Keith and would have told him so.read more

Preparing the funeral for a beloved family member is never easy. Regardless if the death is expected or not, it's still a shock when it happens but funeral plans often need to be made quickly. Gary and his colleagues helped make the process easier. The decades of experience, offering gentle support, suggestions, and reminders, having a presence at all events to take care of the unexpected (e.g. delayed arrival at the cemetery and they let the honor guard know not to leave!), and quietly being there to answer questions was very appreciated. I recommend Cunningham Torch Funeral home without reservation.read more

When in need of funeral home services, it’s a time of significant loss and crisis! We initially met with Gary Maxwell (Location Director). From the outset Gary was very supportive, kind and guided us through a planning process that is very challenging. While our family proceeded into the actual funeral process, we felt very cared about. The staffers also worked to accurately personalized my brother’s significant life into his memorial services. During this difficult time our family was also greatly assisted by staff members Brenda Lacey, Keith Hambright and Dennis Perry. They are all a truly cohesive team that puts client’s families first. Words are not enough to describe the hospitality we received from Gary, the Funeral Director, the amazing Office Manager and his wonderful team. We initially were going with another company but they were so rude and Gary immediately jumped in to help us. In our lowest moments, Gary and the team were Heaven sent. They went over and above, all the way to assisting with necessary documents required by two different embassies. Even after the service, Gary still helped with whatever was required to repatriate my Aunt's remains. I should not forget to mention how great they were with my children. My beloved husband unexpectedly passed away at home and, with no previously agreed upon funeral arrangements in place, I was forced to choose a funeral home for him to rest mere minutes after his death. Fortunately, my daughter did some quick research and found Cunningham Turch for which I am still extremely grateful. Cunningham Turch was a godsend for my family. They significantly lightened the extraordinary load placed on my family by helping us put together a service that allowed us to truly celebrate the life of a wonderful man. Every aspect of the service was personalized to reflect the nature and spirit of my husband. The staff’s attention to detail was impeccable and they were even helpful in areas that extended beyond their own capabilities by recommending the name of a wonderful caterer and beautiful burial site. In our experience with Cunningham Turch, two very different elements stand out: 1) They displayed an attitude of friendly, concerned, cooperative professionalism, and 2) Delight in finding a truly reasonable price, indeed the lowest price around, without sacrificing any of what is important to us. C.T. has a committed staff and exceptional facilities and maintains an impressive, state-of-the-art website. I utilized their online pre-planning form and obituary writing tool to make advance decisions before my mother passed. In our case, their lovely facility and many special options for Life Celebrations weren't needed except for perfectly adequate care of my mother's remains. I was moved when they beautifully prepared her body knowing just me & my sibs would view her before the closed-casket visitation. Our family was so thankful to Cunningham Turch Funeral Home for their personal care they took before, during and after my brother's April funeral. We were initially drawn to CH because they offered a Harley Hurst to transport our brother to Quantico National Cemetery, which was so fitting for Ed's robust life style. Kyle was a welcoming friendly face that stepped in right away to help obtain Ed's military discharge papers. Kyle came along side many time assuring us to be patient, and it worked out in the end...Phew!!! At Kyle's suggestion, we submitted photos of Ed which were incorporated into a beautiful trifold, sign in book, 8 ft poster, a flannel blanket and finally broadcasted on all the chapel walls during the visitation with60-70s music. Those same pictures and music were made available for nominal fee to anyone who wished to have one. they were really wonderful. Dennis was the funeral director the night of the visitation and even stayed an hour past closing as people stayed to reminisce a little longer. What an amazing team of wonderful caring people at Cunningham that were able to make a seemingly sad day seem sorta cool. They know how to make a wonderful memory of a person's life like our brother Ed's life be so very valuable for a little bit longer. My father was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, March 23, 2021. He resided in Naples, FL, and as his only next of kin, I reside in Northern Virginia. Cunningham & Turch Funeral Home coordinated with the funeral home in Naples, FL, to handle all the Arlington arrangements.I was unable to see my father or hold any kind of service due to the pandemic as he died in July 2020. Gary was getting ready to pick up the casket at Reagan National Airport on Friday, March 19th. I called on Thursday, March 18th. I wanted to be able to do something to honor my Dad appropriately. Gary bent over backwards to accommodate my desires, which were far more detailed than what had been planned.Gary and Dennis both exceeded my expectations, and the police motorcycle escort from the funeral home to Arlington National Cemetery was so moving. Definitely a FIVE STAR operation. Gary Maxwell runs a top flight organization. Gary, Brenda, Dennis and Kyle manage to be warm and friendly without losing dignity. That’s an achievement in this world of too casual and disrespectful vs snooty and officious. One of the best things they did for us was a last minute change, pulled off with finesse. No extra charge or even a moment’s pause. PLUS, the family having opted to not have a visitation before the funeral, I personally wanted to see my Dad. I thought I’d be in some dimly lighted side room to say goodbye-bye. They asked me to wait a moment and then took me through the doors of the chapel. There was a full blown display of appropriate videos and a beautifully lighted room set up just for me. They spared nothing even for one person. The entrance rotunda is a lovely, the coffee and tea room is very comfortable, and the chapel is a perfectly classic style. No froufrou. Just a dignified room for mourners and friends. I prefer the classic simplicity over trendy fashion decor. Cunningham’s is very comfortable. From the first interview to the last prayer card Cunningham’s is excellent.read more

I cannot say enough about this funeral home. Our experience started when our beloved one who was experiencing an accelerated decline in health and had barely begun home hospice care. In less than 24 hours of being at home, I was calling funeral homes for arrangements to transport our loved one to another state for burial. I first spoke to Brenda then Gary, both of them were caring and thoughtful. This was a Saturday and Gary was kind enough to help locate a receiving funeral home in the other state, understanding that we may not have much time. As it turned out we lost our family member early the next morning. That’s when Kyle stepped in. Kyle is such a genuine and caring professional that he made a very difficult time for our family a seamless experience. He took the burden off our shoulders and proceeded to organize all parties, provide great guidance, and took care of every detail. What impressed us most about Kyle is that he really cares about the families. From the way he handled the details to fulfilling our wishes, his words and actions were kind and compassionate. I read a lot of reviews but don't generally write them. I definitely didn't expect to be writing a review for a funeral. Something I didn't want to do, but had to have and with which I had only negative prior experience. My husband died unexpectedly. Because of prior loss in his family, I generally knew what he would prefer but had no specific guidance. From the moment I talked with Gary at Cunningham Turch, he connected his personal experiences with mine, offered suggestions for the service that resonated with my family and made it clear he was listening when I talked about my husband and the life he lived. In the months since the service, so many attendees have remarked on how personal it seemed, not contrived, less like a funeral and more like a celebration of the life of my husband and my family. Much of this is because of the thoughtful eulogies that were provided by lifelong friends though against the backdrop of the incredibly personal and accurate photo montage being displayed throughout the room. And then I got the bill. There was video, there were photos and even a special canvas that Gary thoughtfully had made based on our conversations. He helped me with printed obituaries in newspapers in two states, notification of Federal Agencies and an array of arrangements that I had never considered. The estimate he gave me on the day we first spoke was $100 different from the final bill after I made many changes to the arrangements. I never felt like I was being "up-sold". At every step of the way and still today, I was grieving. Cunningham Turch was and is aware of that and very warmly and thoughtfully guided me through an event that, just a short time ago, would have been unthinkable.read more

I can not be thankful enough, or say enough nice things about Cunningham Turch Funeral Home. When my son died, I was almost overcome with grief and did not know where to turn, or what to do about planning a Home Going. Gary led me all the way in the planning, and Brenda was so kind and supportive. My son was cremated, but prior to cremation, they washed him and dressed him up for family viewing. I am so happy that my son's funeral was absolutely beautiful. The family who came, loved seeing all the remembrance pictures in surround in the funeral hall, and on a very large, nicely done poster at the entrance of the funeral Hall. The Funeral Home is large and beautiful, and nice rooms were open to us through out the time we were there. We had the repast there and amso happy we did. One friend said the room in which we had the repast, made the gathering so intimate! The two men on duty could not be more kind and helpful. They took responsibility for clean up, after the repast. There is no doubt that funerals are expensive these days, But, for what we paid, and the service we got, the atmosphere, and the gifts we left with, was much more than any Funeral Home I know of has to offer. The layout of the service program was artistically done. They gifted us with a sufficient number of personal, beautifully designed thank you cards. The guest book given, was not just "a book for people to sign". It was personalized throughout, with my son's pictures, and with a nice covering. We were able to take home the beautiful poster Gary made. He also made a CD for us to have. And the urn was beautiful, and was engraved. I would highly recommend Cunningham funeral home. You will not be disappointed!read more

We used Cunningham Turch Funeral Home for my stepfather and they exceeded all of our expectations. We went with the upgraded funeral service and it was the perfect tribute to honor his life. The staff was helpful, compassionate, and made themselves available for any and all questions. When we got home and delved into the items received and produced from the service, we discovered a commemorative blanket and a video of the photo loop they'd created. I would highly recommend Cunningham Turch if you're looking for a funeral home to go above and beyond your expectations.read more

BEST SERVICE I could ever ask for. I will not name the other funeral home I have an experience with, but compared to my experience there, Cunningham Turch was top of the line. Anyone who has lost someone will tell you this process is very difficult emotionally to go through. I never felt I was being sold a thing here, or pushed to get the "nicer" this or that. Jeremy Blake dealt with me and was very compassionate through and through. I was charged THOUSANDS less here, and received various extras that I was told were "add-on's" at a competitors funeral home during my last loss. I'm sure the packages change and my experience can't be expected by everyone for each visit, but I feel it only honest to compare the two side by side. I chose cremation for both loved ones and did not hold a funeral:Competitor Experience: The viewing prior to cremation was held in a private room, and they were on a table under a white blanket, I don't believe they were dressed underneath but chose not to investigate. It seemed more like a body ID then a final viewing. This was because we did not opt for a funeral and formal viewing (that part was quit expensive for us). The director assisted us with having an obituary notice put into the paper and provided us with a nice webpage where a longer obituary was posted, along with many pictures we were able to upload for others to visit. We were asked to provide clothes or other belongings to be cremated with them. We were provided with the remains in a black HDPE plastic container. I felt that at each turn, if we were not spending top dollar when asked, it was very evident in the presentation. Almost like they were rubbing that fact in.Cunningham Turch Experience:I was asked to provide clothes and other belongings for the viewing and to be cremated with them. I was provided with small baseball sized prayer cards as well as a holiday-sized card version and a signature book. I was given suggestions of verses to use for these which helped a lot. The director also helped post an obituary in the newspaper as well as providing a place for a longer online obituary and pictures for others to view. One note I have is the website was not fully updated with the pictures I wanted when the newspaper obituary was run so if people went there that day, they would have seen an unfinished page. The viewing was more of a formal style viewing even though I opted not to have a formal funeral and viewing. My loved one was in a very nice, well-lit room, in a casket (even though they were to be cremated and not put into a casket, so this was not bought, it was just provided for the viewing) and clothed in the clothes I provided, even with the necklace I provided put on. It was a very respectful way to have the final viewing, very beautiful. I am not very familiar with this process and was not told it would be so different from my last experience so I didn't invite anyone to come expecting a repeat of my first time. I wish I had invited others, if I was told how the viewing would go here I would have, but I can't blame anyone for that. The remains were presented in blue velour bag with a faux wood container holding the actual remains which was much nicer to see your loved one in then the plastic container. I felt I was treated as if my loved one was also their loved one, and that no matter what "package" I chose to pay for, I never once was "reminded" I didn't spend big money by the presentation. So, to recap, Cunningham Turch was exponentially better and a few thousand dollars cheaper and they provided more than just the cremation although that is all we paid for in both places. Even if I had to have my loved one transported a few hundred miles I would still choose Cunningham Turch over anyone else. Thank you, Jeremy, for all you provided during such a hard time in anyone's life.read more

My mother's body was brought here Friday night. They are refusing to let us see her body until Wednesday! We flew in from out of town to see her within 8 hours of her death, we have had to postpone her memorial service because of their horrible service. This funeral home is owned and operated by the same people that own Northern Virginia Burial & Cremation Society, Inc. This is extremely disrespectful of my dead mother, and our grieving family. People die 24/7 including holidays, they should have people on call so that no one goes through the hell they are putting my family through. Someone should have contacted us the moment she was brought in to explain that they are closed weekends and holidays, and they should have let us schedule an appointment when I called them at 2am Saturday morning, and again when I called twice at 9am Saturday morning to say I was on my way to see her. Instead, I had to call Monday, to find out that because it's a holiday, they can't let us see her today (Monday) . Horrible horrible service no respect for the dead or their grieving familiesread more

My sisters death was very unexpected, we weren’t prepared for this nor had any idea on how to plan this funeral. Jose Madrigal went above and beyond for my sisters funeral and to ensure my family pleased with every little thing. He want just arranging the funeral but constantly checking in with my family and was always there to make sure that we were doing ok during the day of the funeral. Everyone was really impressed with his hard work and we couldn’t thank him enough for making this day so beautiful. Thank you so much Jose!read more

As an owner of a small business in Arlington, I am very particular about customer service. In March of this year we were told that my 95 year old father-in-law was nearing his final months of life. I then began our search for a funeral home. After having spoken to several funeral homes whose names I recognized, I was appalled to learn how commercial and sales oriented the funeral industry had become. When I reached out to Cunningham Turch I was delighted to speak with funeral director Jae Turner. Ms. Turner went over various options for my family to consider, and being aware that our needs were simple, she suggested those options that would meet our needs without running up a huge expense for my mother-in-law. In addition, Cunningham Turch really understands the needs of a military family. Ms. Turner was compassionate, professional and efficient when the time came to call on her services last week. We are extremely grateful to Cunningham Turch for exhibiting such professionalism and ethics. Her kindness touched us deeply.read more

My husband passed about 2 weeks ago. In accordance with his wishes for a simple cremation, we were referred by the NOVA Burial and Cremation Society to Cunningham Turch in Alexandria. From the time we first spoke on the telephone to visiting the funeral home the day before the viewing, we were struck by their warmth, sincerity, professionalism and willingness to facilitate whatever the family's wishes were. The viewing was on a Wednesday. Alexandria won't permit a crematorium in the city, so it is located in a sister facility in Dale City.Even though Jae communicated at the time that the cremation would take place 4 to 5 business days after the viewing, she went over and beyond duty to accommodate our wish to have the cremation on Saturday, so several family members could be present. She spent all day Thursday making phone calls, and getting the death certificate so the ME could do the required examination on Friday. For this we are so, so very thankful and appreciative. When I went to the funeral home on Monday to pick up the death certificates and my husband's ashes, I encountered a grieving family, there to make the necessary funeral arrangements. Told them about my experience and that they had made an excellent decision in choosing Cunningham. In hearing that, I'm sure they were a little bit less apprehensive about what they were about to experience themselves.read more

Cunningham Turch made our experience with my father's life celebration easier to prepare for. Brenda treated us like family with warm hugs and encouraging words throughout our process. From the time that I called to inquire about how to prepare and what to expect Brenda's empathy/sympathy was so genuine. Dennis and Zack I can't thank you enough for the beautiful set up preparation at the church all the way through to getting us to the cemetery. The guest sign in book, photo album, trifolds, prayer cards and thank you notes were beautiful. The casket was amazingly beautiful and the surprise engraving was truly wonderful. Jae, thank you for answering my email regarding the photo collage and being so patient while I sent the photos via email. You did an amazing job!!!! I certainly cannot forget our driver, Rory for being so attentive to us all, but especially to my mother. You were kind enough to offer her snacks, water and made sure the temperature in the vehicle was just right for her. You melted my heart when you took your coat off to be sure she was warm enough outside at the cemetery. Thank you Cunningham Turch Funeral Home.read more

My mother in law was 103, when she arrived at the hospital, we were told that she was dieing. I called Ms Turner, she emailed paperwork to be completed. We had planned on going in the following day to complete arrangements. She died that night. I called @ 3 a.m. their phone was answered promptly. When we arrived at 9 a.m., they had people at the hospital to pick her up. We signed the paperwork. One of our requirements was to have her ashes shipped to a cemetery in New York. No problem.Ms Turner and the staff were very caring and helpful. They made a very difficult situation bearable. I highly recommend their services.read more

Thank you Jae and Brenda, and the staff we may not have met. Our father, Wilbur Aldrich, had a beautiful memorial service! The sailors who provided the flag-folding ceremony were awesome. The staff at the Cunningham Funeral home were excellent to work with when planning my father's funeral. The funeral home is quite nice inside, compared to any other funeral home I have been to in the past. Our funeral director, Jae, did an amazing job coordinating the arrangements for visitation and with Quantico National Cemetery, where my father was buried. One of the most modern and beautiful funeral homes I have visited as President of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association. Michael Turch has remodeled the funeral home over the last year or so and given it new life. As soon as you come in the funeral home you enter the rotunda which is spectacular. I toured the funeral home and was most impressed with the building and decor. In the chapel, they were adding the capability of being able to play a life tribute DVD and/or favorite scenery of a loved one on screens in the entire chapel to make it very personable. They are very pro-active in making sure a service is detailed to your needs. As I was given the tour, I met some of the other employees who seemed to be very professional, friendly and caring.read more
