Vernell Saunders, born on February 10, 1928, in Doswell, Virginia, passed away at the age of 96 on September 3, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of the late Hester Pearl James and Chastine James. Vernell spent her early years and early teenage years in Doswell with her siblings. 

As a teenager, Vernell moved to Washington, D.C., where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Henry Saunders. Their romance blossomed, and they married the day after Vernell turned 18. and were married for 42 years.  Their marriage was filled with joy, laughter and lots of love. During this time, Vernell worked in a hair salon and had the pleasure of assisting in styling many celebrities' hair including Lena Horne. Her caring nature led her to pursue nursing, but she chose to dedicate herself to raising her family. Vernall and Henry had 9 children who they cherished. As a devoted homemaker, Vernell thrived in her role, exemplifying what it means to be a loving wife and an exceptional mother. She was known for her incredible cooking, sewing skills, and her ability to keep her children engaged and entertained.

Vernell and Henry were renowned for their hospitality, always opening their doors to family and friends; offering warmth and a welcoming space to all who visited and had them stay a while. Their home at 318 E. Raymond Avenue became a beloved gathering place, where many of their family including cousins, grandchildren and other friends and family members their home was the place where everyone came together and came together. After Henry passed away Vernell kept that same warm heart by keeping her home doors always open to all. Vernell's strength, bravery and resilience were evident as she courageously overcame breast cancer. She loved her home natural remedies like garlic, onions, and honey, and it was only later in life that she required medication. Her approach to wellness and her enduring spirit were a source of inspiration to many.

Vernell is preceded in death by her parents Hester Pearl James and Chastine James, brother, Irvin C. James, and five sisters: Pearl Howard, Minnie Fells, Alease Gray, Maggie Carter, and Bertha Taylor. Her Husband Henry Saunders Sr., 3 children Larry Saunders, Jackie Winborne, Henry Saunders Jr. , and granddaughter Shaquita Bell 

She is survived by her two brothers, Raymond James and Lynwood James; one sister, Dorothy James; and six cherished children: Jeffery Saunders (Charlene), Christine Lewis (Randy), Veldo Horace (Randall), Zackary Saunders, Laverne Thomas (Samuel), and Bertha McKiver (Darnell). She is also lovingly remembered by her very special granddaughter, Monsita Saunders, and a host of other dear grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, family, and friends, all of whom she held close to her heart.

We are profoundly grateful for the time we shared with Vernell and the love she brought into our lives. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion will continue to inspire and uplift us all.

The family will receive friends at the Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 on Monday, September 16, 2024 from 10:00 AM until the time of her Life Celebration at 11:00 AM.  Interment will follow at 1:30 PM at the National Cemetery at Quantico; where she will be reunited with her beloved husband Henry.
