Mary Jane Greenwood Stegall, a lifelong resident of Alexandria, passed away on April 16, 2022 at the age of 97. Born on March 13, 1925, she was the daughter of the late James Garrett Greenwood and Rosie Lee (Woolls) Greenwood. She was the beloved wife of the late Jerome Junior Stegall. They married on June 14, 1956, and shared 53 years together before Junior passed away in 2009. Her siblings Elsie May Cornell, James Delbert Greenwood, Jr. and Charles Gayton Arrington predeceased her. Her step father was the late Charles Henley Arrington.
After high school, Mary worked as a clerk-typist for the Department of the Navy at the Navy Yard in DC, and then at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria. Later in life she worked for other businesses in the Alexandria area. Mary and Junior purchased a home in Hybla Valley, and lived there until her health declined and she moved in 2016. Mary’s great grandfather Benjamin F. Greenwood, was the longest serving lighthouse keeper for the historic Jones Point Lighthouse in Old Town Alexandria for over 40 years. Mary’s grandfather James B. Greenwood was raised at the lighthouse.
