Jonathan Seth Honey

Jonathan Seth Honey passed away at the age of 33 due to a tragic accident on 31 March 2023. He was born at Griffiss AFB NY to Dr. David A. Honey and Cynthia N. Yellen on 23 February 1990. After spending his early years in Rome NY, Jonathan and his family moved to Hanscom AFB MA and then to Fairfax VA in 1997. During adulthood, Jonathan remained in the Northern Virginia area.

Jonathan’s family are members of Congregation Olam Tikvah where he received his Bar Mitzvah and Confirmation. Throughout his youth, Jonathan actively participated in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. It was through these experiences that Jonathan developed a deep love for the outdoors. Jonathan graduated from the WT Woodson HS where he participated in cross-country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and he remained an active and competitive runner afterwards. Jonathan then went on to attend Old Dominion University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and then earned a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering at George Mason University. Following graduate school, Jonathan held engineering positions as a defense contractor before becoming a program manager at Washington Gas.

Through the Boy Scouts, Jonathan had his first opportunity to engage in the clay shooting sports. While at GMU, he was a dedicated member of their Clay Shooting Team and through this wonderful activity he honed his skills to perfection. From his first encounter, Jonathan
showed that he had a natural and enviable ability to succeed in this sport. He and the team traveled widely to participate in collegiate competitions, and this further increased his life-long interest in clay shooting. Jonathan later became an active and involved member of Fairfax Rod and Gun Club, where he was consistently the top scorer on his family’s skeet and trap team.

In addition to the clay shooting sports, Jonathan had a passion for participating in a wide variety of outdoor activities and he continued to seek out new and challenging opportunities. He was a dedicated runner, cyclist, backpacker, snowboarder, and downhill skier and had recently participated in rock-climbing. Jonathan was especially devoted to fishing on the Chesapeake Bay with his family on their boat and he spent many days each year from the beginning to the last day of the season chasing all manner of fish. Out of necessity, he was very skilled at boat maintenance and stated that he was “more familiar with the workings of an outboard motor than he was of an automobile.” Jonathan was also an avid bowler and especially enjoyed competing against his mother and brother Matthew.

Jonathan’s infectious smile, outgoing personality, cheerful outlook, and his willingness to help anyone at any time will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. Jonathan is survived by his father, his mother, his brothers Daniel of New York and Matthew of Virginia, and by his aunts, uncles, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the charity of your choice.
