Czeslawa Juszkiewicz

Czeslawa Juszkiewicz led an extraordinary life, not least because of its longevity. She died in Oakton, Virginia at the age of 102 and is survived by two daughters, Alexandra (Alex) Brindley (Australia) and Jolanta (J.J.) Juszkiewicz of Fairfax, Virginia, two grandsons, Mark and Peter Brindley (Australia), five great grandchildren Ryan, Madison (Maddy), Keely, Jessica (Jess) and Mia Brindley (Australia), and generations of nieces and nephews in Israel and Poland. Czeslawa was beloved by everyone who met her. She was a special human being, a mensch!
She often said that she liked good people and always seemed to see the good in them. Czeslawa was strong, the very epitome of the saying, “what doesn’t kill you, makes you strong.” Whatever cards she was dealt in life, including that of surviving the holocaust, Czeslawa did what it took to play the strongest hand.
At 80, she walked across the Bay Bridge in Maryland (4.3 miles). For a dozen years she completed the 5K Walk for the Homeless in Washington, D.C., the last one at the age of 90. Each weekend for more than two decades, Czeslawa went to see a couple of movies, developing a real penchant for theatres with reclining seats and 3D films, but pretty much enjoyed them all.
During her life, Czeslawa experienced many memorable voyages, some as a refugee and immigrant living in several continents and in her later years, as a tourist and adventurer. Fjords in Norway, lochs in Scotland, Greek Islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas, the Alaska inner passage, and many more, even a rowboat in a water-filled cave in Belize. To describe her as amazing would be an understatement.
Czeslawa’s favorite song, “You Are My Sunshine” is a fitting tribute to how she will be remembered by all whose lives she touched. Be kind to yourself and to others.
