Alberto “Cookie” Rodriguez left a mark on the world and everyone he knew. With his inviting personality, generosity, and warm spirit, he could connect with so many, pass on lessons, and influence us in positive ways.

Alberto was born in the Bronx, NY, on March 7, 1960, to Roberto & Gregoria Rodriguez. He graduated from Escuela Superior Dr. Santiago Veve Calzada in Fajardo, PR in 1978.

He loved reading, riding his bike to and from work whenever he could, dancing, and traveling! He dabbled in all sports but especially loved playing basketball, soccer, and tennis. He was quite mischievous and loved surprising people.

Friends, family, and colleagues consistently describe Alberto as a kind, warm, generous, and humble man. He lived a life dedicated to service to his country. He delivered mail for the Postal Service, was a dedicated soldier in the Army from 1978 to 1985, during which he worked as a Signals Intelligence Analyst, and was posted in Panama, Honduras, and El Salvador during the civil war and at the NSA in Fort Meade, MD. During his 35-year career with the Foreign Service, he served in Bogota as an INL Program Officer and as INL director in Guatemala, Pakistan,
Peru, and Mexico. Before his time in INL, he served as a Consular Officer in Barbados and as an Information Management Specialist in Spain. He was always front-and-center, representing the United States and the Department in some of the most important places and handling the stickiest issues. He helped re-establish U.S. diplomatic presence in Somalia, served as an Information Officer in Pakistan during the Bin Laden Operation, and helped open new diplomatic posts in Estonia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan in Operation Restore Hope following the breakup of the former Soviet Union.

Alberto had a challenging, rewarding, and impactful career. Anyone who crossed paths with him could see that his work was his true calling, particularly working with and leading others. He was able to connect with, empower, and uplift people around him through his work, and that was most important to him. He shared the best of who he was and what he had to offer.

Alberto was a caring husband, outstanding girl dad, loving brother, son, and friend. He had a vibrant spirit and a smile that lit up a room. He had a sharp memory and treated everyone with the same respect and warmth regardless of their role or ranking.

Alberto will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Silvia Rodriguez, daughters Ariana and Sarah, and his brother, Carlos. Alberto is preceded in death by his daughter, Daniela Maria, and his parents.

We will always lament not having enough time with him. Alberto is loved, admired, and respected by his family, friends, and colleagues. We miss him dearly, and he will be remembered frequently and fondly.

Alberto nació en el Bronx, Nueva York, el 7 de marzo de 1960, hijo de Roberto y Gregoria Rodríguez. Se graduó de la Escuela Superior Dr. Santiago Veve Calzada en Fajardo, PR en 1978.

Le encantaba leer, ir y venir del trabajo en bicicleta, bailar y viajar! Practicaba todos los deportes, pero le encantaba jugar baloncesto, fútbol y tenis. Era muy travieso y le encantaba sorprender a la gente.

Amigos, familiares y colegas describen a Alberto como un hombre amable, cariñoso, generoso y humilde.

Vivió una vida dedicada al servicio de su país. Entregó correo para el Servicio Postal, fue un soldado dedicado en el Ejército de 1978 a 1985, durante el cual trabajó como Analista de Inteligencia de Señales, y fue destinado a Panamá, Honduras y El Salvador durante la guerra civil y en la NSA en Fort Meade, MD. Durante sus 35 años de carrera en el Servicio Exterior, trabajó en Bogotá como Oficial de Programas del INL y como director del INL en Guatemala, Pakistán, Perú y México. Antes de trabajar en el INL, fue funcionario consular en Barbados y especialista en gestión de la información en España. Siempre estuvo en primera línea, representando a Estados Unidos y al Departamento en algunos de los lugares más importantes y ocupándose de los asuntos más espinosos. Ayudó a restablecer la presencia diplomática de Estados Unidos en Somalia, actuó como Oficial de Información en Pakistán durante la Operación Bin Laden y contribuyó a la apertura de nuevas sedes diplomáticas en Estonia, Ucrania y Uzbekistán en la Operación Restaurar la Esperanza tras la desintegración de la antigua Unión Soviética.

Alberto tuvo una carrera desafiante, gratificante y llena de impacto. Cualquiera que se cruzara con él podía ver que su trabajo era su verdadera vocación, sobre todo trabajar con otras personas y dirigirlas. A través de su trabajo era capaz de conectar con la gente que le rodeaba, empoderarla y elevarla, y eso era lo más importante para él. Compartió lo mejor de sí mismo y de lo que tenía que ofrecer.

Alberto era un marido cariñoso, un padre excepcional, un hermano cariñoso, un hijo y un amigo. Tenía un espíritu vibrante y una sonrisa que iluminaba cualquier habitación.Tenía una memoria excelente y trataba a todo el mundo con el mismo respeto y calidez, independientemente de su función o rango.

Alberto será profundamente extrañado por su devota esposa, Silvia Rodríguez, sus hijas Ariana y Sarah, y su hermano, Carlos. Le preceden en la muerte su hija Daniela María y sus padres.

Siempre lamentaremos no haber tenido suficiente tiempo con él. Alberto es querido, admirado y respetado por su familia, amigos y colegas. Le echamos mucho de menos y le recordaremos con frecuencia y cariño.
