Thomas Edwin Taylor, age 96, of Alexandria, Va passed away suddenly in his home on February 20, 2007. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Thelma Taylor. Born in Beaufort N.C. in 1910, he started a long career in the Pharmacy business as a medical representative, a pharmacist, and then for many years as a manager of a large drug store chain. Upon retirement he was very active in local politics, serving for 8 years as treasurer of councilwoman Redillia Pepper and 3 years as president of the Alexandria chapter of AARP. He received citations for services to the RSVP and outstanding services to the Del Ray Seniors with whom he served as president for 3 years. He was active in promoting The Alexandria Little Theatre and many other community activities. He will be greatly missed by his beloved Del Ray neighbors. He is survived by his loving daughter Joyce Murtland and husband Dennis of Virginia Beach, six grandchildren, Kim, Chris, Robin, Noel, Keith, and Kevin. Six great grandchildren Christopher, Ashley, Taylor, Aubrey, Amber, Nicholas, and a great-great grandson, Will. Survivors also include his step-daughter Pat Barnette and husband Jim of West Virginia, four grandchildren Tammy, Jannie, Terry, and Jimmy. Seven great grandchildren, Katie, Hairy, Chelsea, Jimmy, Emily, Jerry, and Kevin Shifflett who tragically died at the age of 8. Friends will be received at Cunningham Funeral Home, 811 Cameron St., Alexandria, VA. On Friday February 23rd from 6-9pm. All are invited to attend a graveside burial service Saturday, February 24th at 11am at Mt. Comfort Cemetery, 6600 South Kings Highway. A memorial service and celebration of life will be conducted by Rev. John Conner at the Del Ray United Methodist Church, 100 E. Windsor Ave. at 12 noon. A reception in the church social hall will follow. Memorial donations may be made to the Alexandria Fire Department, 900 Second St., Alexandria, Virginia 22314.
