Stephen Burton Cohen was born in Chicago, Ill. in 1940, and moved to Tucson with his family circa 1948-1949. Throughout his life, Stephen held a passion for math, science-fiction novels, photography, education, his family, and the importance of safety and protecting human life.
In 1958, while in the 11th grade Stephen made his first public foray into the world of mathematics by inventing a logarithm scale for slide rules, which was utilized by Pickett, Inc. in a variety of their products.
Stephen would graduate with a PHD in Theoretical Mathematics from the University of Arizona. While attending the U of A, Stephen met, fell in love with and married Carol Ann (McLane) Cohen.
He began his profession as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Virginia Commonwealth University, embracing his love of math and teaching. Then his career took a different path when he became a Safety Analyst at the Federal Aviation Administration. Stephen’s statistical analysis was utilized to predict the cause of, and prevention of airplane crashes. His work at the FAA saved countless lives.
An avid pen and knife collector, as well as a shutterbug, Stephen was rarely found without a handy pen, trusty pocket knife, or a camera ready to snap a picture of friends and family.
Above all else, Stephen valued his family and loved ones.
Stephen passed away on June 2nd, 2020 at the age of 79.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents Samuel Howard Cohen and Ruth Florence (Goldberg) Cohen, his sister-in-law Diana Mae (McLane) Rohler, his brother-in-law Lloyd Rohler, and his wife Carol Ann (McLane) Cohen.
He is survived by his children, Rochelle Anne Cohen and David Samuel Cohen, his sister-in-law Sara Cohen, his sister-in-law Betty McLane-Iles, his brother-in-law Larry Iles, his sister in law Shauna Cohen, his brother Jerrold Cohen, and his nieces and nephews.
