Scott A. Harris, National Security and International Affairs Analyst, Public Official and International Businessman National security advisor for two United States Senate Majority Leaders and an international businessman, Harris died Saturday, May 2, 2015 of pancreatic cancer. Harris, 67, was President for Europe for Lockheed Martin Corporation for a decade until his retirement in 2012. Based in Brussels, Belgium, Harris headed a staff of 20. He was also a frequent speaker on defense industrial issues at international conferences. Harris served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense and Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary 1995-97. His work on Capitol Hill covered eight years, including serving as national security advisor to Majority Leaders Sen. Robert C. Byrd and Sen. George Mitchell. Harris was Senior Analyst at RAND Corporation and Assistant Director of RAND’s Washington Office. Harris held a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin, and began his career teaching foreign policy and international relations at Rice University. He grew up in Wyoming and earned his BA in international studies at the University of Wyoming. After retirement in 2012, he served as Senior Advisor at the Atlantic Council of the United States. He was on the Advisory Board of the Security and Defense Agenda in Brussels, the Board of Visitors of the Political Science Department of the University of Wisconsin, and the board of the community foundation, ACT for Alexandria. He travelled extensively, enjoyed hiking holidays throughout Europe, and was an avid music and garden lover. He is survived by his wife Martha Harris of Alexandria, Virginia to whom he was married for 33 years, and his sisters Linda Harris, of Denver, Colorado and Connie Harris, of Longmont, Colorado.
