Nixon

Oscar “Monnie” Nixon, Jr, passed away peacefully at the Washington DC VA Medical Center on March 8, 2023, at the age of 75.

He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 28, 1947, to Ruth Simpson and Alcide Bondy, and immediately adopted by William “Oscar” Nixon and his wife Grace (Fields). Following Grace’s death, he was raised by William and his wife, Angela (Tate). During his life, he was considered a beloved son to many, including his future mother-in-law, Ethel Fischer, his honorary mother Rebecca Skinner, and his stepmother, Eula (Spiller) Nixon.

Oscar attended John McDonough #35 Senior High school and, upon graduation, enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he began training in California as a Russian linguist. When he finished language school, he returned home and married Oscarlene Fischer in 1965. After twelve years of military service, Oscar returned home to New Orleans.

Oscar was initially diagnosed with cancer in 2001. After sounding the bell of remission, Oscar eventually moved to Brookhaven, Mississippi where he spent years with his father and stepmother, Eula. After their passing, and when he was no longer able to live on his own, Oscar lived with his daughter Yolanda and her husband Dwayne Thomas. He was a true fighter and fought valiantly until he was called home to eternal rest.

Oscar was preceded in death by his biological and adoptive parents, and siblings, Theodore Williams, and Pastel Wilson. He is survived by his three daughters: Shawn (Darryl) Eure, Yolanda (Dwayne) Thomas, and Erica Nixon; nine grandchildren: Dominique, India, Anthony, Joshua, Jacob, Briana, Ciera, Josiah, and Jonathan; one great-grandchild, Nixon; and siblings Birdie Lucas, Bantu Bryant, Henry Bryant, Jacob Bryant, Venetia Meekins, Kimberly Pazon, and Albert Bryant.

A Virtual Memorial will be held April 1, 2023, 11am CDT. For Zoom link, text (470) 505-9293 or email oscarnixonjr@gmail.com.
