Alexandria, VA – Muriel Louise (Roberts) Massey, 84, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. Muriel was surrounded by her family in the last days of her life, all of whom will be eternally grateful for that time with her.

Muriel was born on April 8, 1934 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire to the late Leon and Gladys Roberts and a graduate of Brewster Academy, Wolfeboro NH in 1952. She was also a medical records transcriptionist for many years and retired from Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro NH. Muriel was a member of the Auxiliary to VFW Post 7327, Springfield, Virginia and was twice recognized for her fundraising activities in her apartment community at Manchester Lakes Senior Apartments in support of many activities the VFW supports for military service. One of Muriel’s favorite activities (since age 18) was playing bingo and she has a large loving group of friends and “adopted” sons and daughters who all called her “Mom” in the bingo community.
She is preceded in death by her late husband Roland Massey, her parents Leon and Gladys Roberts, her brother Donald (June) Roberts, her sister Lillian (Jeanette) Massey, and her beloved youngest son, William (Bill) Murdock.

She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Murrell, Gary (Monica) Murdock, David Murdock, and daughter -in-law of the heart, Carmen Jo Trummer. She was “GMa” to grandchildren Jessica (Bryan) Poley, Jennifer (Justin) Wood, Jennifer (Michael) Paloski, Andrew Murdock, Michael Murdock, Zaviere Murrell, Madeline Murdock, Tej Trummer-Dutta, and Torin Trummer. And “GGMa” to great-grandchildren Damien and Delilah Wood, Ethan and Jonathan Polaski. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, stepchildren, and many life-long friends.

The family would also like to thank the medical professionals (our angels) at Inova Fairfax Hospital and The Virginian Skilled Nursing facility who took care of Muriel in her final days.

In lieu of local services, Muriel will be taken home to her beloved Wolfeboro, New Hampshire this summer where she will be reunited with her parents in her eternal resting place.

Also, in lieu of flowers or other items of remembrance, the family is suggesting donations in her name to The Mount Washington Observatory at www.mountwashington.org, Stop Soldier Suicide at www.stopsoldiersuicide.org, or any organization related to military service.

Condolences can be offered online at www.cunninghamfuneralhome.net or written in care of Valerie Murrell, 6007 Curtier Dr Unit E, Alexandria VA 22310.

Condolence Messages

  1. Anthony Chu says:

I serve with Val at Franconia Volunteer Fire Department and am saddened to learn the news.

When Val isn’t volunteering on a bingo night, she is a paying customer. I LOVED seeing Val and her mom come early to bingo, set their playing area up, grab dinner, and then try to make money and have fun for six hours twice a week. How many mother-daughter pairs enjoy such an opportunity? Inspiring! It is clear there was a strong bond and they just wanted to have a good time together. And they always had a cheery attitude (frequent fire department bingo patrons can admit that not everyone shows up friendly) and made sure their night together was enjoyable. I will miss seeing her dabbing away at her bingo cards at Table 8.

Please accept my condolences, on behalf of Franconia VFD Bingo Team A: Val… may you and your extended family take comfort in the memories that you all had with your mom, knowing that those memories will keep your mom’s legacy alive for generations to come.
