FREEMAN MURIEL C. FREEMAN (Age 94) Of Alexandria, VA passed away at Walter Reed Medical Center, November 16, 2017, from complications following surgery.

Muriel was not only a writer and an award-winning sculptor, but her full range of community and philanthropic activities leave an impressive legacy of service.

As a teacher and consultant to the mentally and physically challenged impaired, she was the first Executive Director of the Fairfax County, VA Activity Center for Retarded Adults.

A Qualified VA State and County Extension Service Judge, she also was President of Region IV Episcopal Women, a Member of the National Parliamentarians serving as Parliamentarian for the Episcopal Church Women of the VA Episcopal Diocese.

She served on the Board of Directors of the Episcopal Bloomfield Home for Disabled Children. Also was President of the Alexandria Symphony, President of the Northern Virginia District of Womans’ Clubs, and a Past National President of the National League of American Pen Women. Mrs. Freeman belonged to P.E.O., was a long-time member of the Belle Haven Country Club, the Officers Club at Ft. Belvoir, and of St. James’ Episcopal Church.

She was very proud of her outstanding Norwegian heritage. Mrs. Freeman felt privileged to have been a direct descendant of Elector Joachim II (1515-1586) of Brandenburg.

Muriel Freeman enthusiastically enjoyed life and she deeply cherished her Christian faith. She taught Sunday school and served as Sunday School Superintendent and led Bible studies.

While living in Maryland she and her husband, Clifford Freeman, were the recipients of the State of Maryland’s Governor’s Award for Outstanding Service to the Children of Maryland.

She will be remembered for her inquiring mind, her interest and loving concern for others which touched many lives. Preceded in death by her husband Clifford (her high school sweetheart; they were married two months short of 69 years when he died in 2012), an infant son, her son Gregory Alan Sr., her brother George Lowe and sister Janis Versen. She is mourned by her children, Muriel Sue, George Mark (Donna), Gordon (Joan) and Anna, nine grandchildren, 15 Great-Grandchildren, her sister Andrean Elvert and sister-in-law Alyce Lowe.

A memorial service and reception will be held Saturday, December 2, at 10 a.m. at St. James’ Episcopal Church at Mount Vernon, 5614 Old Mill Rd., Alexandria VA 22309, 703-780-3081. In memory of Muriel Freeman, the family requests that any donations be made to St. James’ Episcopal Church.
