With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael David Tuffli of Alexandria, Virginia as we commemorate his life and return him to his family’s home of Quincy, Illinois. Born, November 11, 1937, and raised in Quincy, Michael was the son of David Christian and Mary Agnes Donovan Tuffli. After graduating from Quincy High School, Michael entered the U.S. Army and served for many years as a Construction Draftsman before transitioning to civilian service with the Navy. Blessed with artistic skills, Michael spent most of his career as an Illustrator and Art Editor for the All Hands magazine of the U.S. Navy. His art graced the cover of the magazine on many occasions and his illustrations brought smiles to the readers. Michael found passion in life with the arts, loving classical music and purposedly finding beauty in the life surrounding him. He found comfort in books and stamps, treasuring his collections of both. As a gentle soul, who treated everyone kindly, he loved observing and hearing stories of others. He cherished his community of Alexandria and lived his life quietly in his final years with the support of his good friend, Gary Edwards (Margaret “Peg”) and generous neighbors. We picture Michael gazing at the stars with one of his telescopes, listening to his music, with a book on his lap or walking along the Potomac River feeding the birds, dreaming about what is to come. We send you off, Michael, on your next journey.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, David and Mary Tuffli; sister Maryanna McGuire (Vincent); and brother Christian Stephen Tuffli. Michael is survived by his sister, Patricia Newton (William) of Glendale, Missouri and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on October 23, 2021, 11:30 am at Quincy Memorial Park Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois. In Michael’s memory, we ask that any contributions be made to a Symphony of your choice to support the continuation of beautiful music or to Senior Services of Alexandria, providing resources for the most vulnerable effected by COVID-19 (https://seniorservicesalex.org/donate).
