John N Hathcock of Alexandria passed away on April 30, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. John was born in North Carolina the son of the late Nathan and Alice (Little) Hathcock of New Salem.
John was a world class scientist, teacher and pioneer in the field of Nutritional Toxicology. His academic background consisted of a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees from North Carolina State University, a PHD from Cornell University and also a two-year Post- Doctoral appointment at St. Louis University School of Medicine in the laboratory of Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Edward Adelbert Doisy. John was a Professor at Iowa State, Penn State and Cornell University in the Philippines. He also worked for the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and retired as the Senior Scientist at the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). John also co-authored and published 7 books, 150+ scientific and review papers, and gave lectures and participated on panels in approximately 35 counties.
Papa John as he was often called is survived by his wife and best friend Susan as well as his two amazing sons – Galen (Jennifer) and Byron (Sharon), 6 loving grandchildren – Myles (Virginia), Frances, Alexander, Quinn, Maxen and Brienne and 4 adorable great grandchildren – Caroline, Amelia, Caleb and Natalie. John is also survived by his Sister – Rebecca (Bobby Neal) Simpson.
Despite his significant professional accomplishments and well-rounded background (he was also an athlete, a vocalist and a pilot), John was a humble, jovial living life, generous man who loved spending time with and helping his family. John loved his books reading two books each week up until last 6 months as well as his music.
John will be immensely missed by his family and friends and a Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to the CAA Foundation since John’s life was shortened and eventually ended by an incurable neurological disease – Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA).

John’s brain was donated by the family to the Georgetown University Hospital Brain Bank. Hopefully, the research will be helpful for future generations.
Our deepest sympathy to Susan and the Hathcock sons and their families. We knew John and his family when he was a colleague at Iowa State University.He was one of the best! John was a great asset to our academic department, and an overall geat guy !
