Jean Salisbury Gill

Jean Salisbury Gill

inmemorial 1

Jean Salisbury Gill died peacefully in her Arlington, VA home on November 9, 2022, just shy of her 88th birthday.

Born in Orange, NJ to F. Randall and Jean Arnott Salisbury, Jean was the oldest of four children.   She treasured growing up in Maplewood, NJ close to cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. After graduating from Columbia HS, Jean earned a bachelors in Classics from Drew University and a master’s in Education from Goucher College.

In 1957, Jean moved to Sayville, NY to teach, spending many happy years at Cherry Avenue and Lincoln Avenue Elementary Schools. Her fellow educators remained among Jeans dearest friends, and she remembered each student with fondness. Following her 2000 retirement, Jean spent time with friends on Long Island, as well as frequent travel. Relocating to the DC area in 2019, Jean appreciated being close to family while living independently.

Jean was known for her kindness, generosity and impeccable manners. She enjoyed visiting with loved ones, reading and time at the beach (especially with her sister, Sue). Jeans sharp intellect and civility were in evidence until her last days, as she read, sent birthday cards and voted remotely. Jean was predeceased by her parents, her brother Bill Salisbury, her former husband Frank Gill and several cousins. She leaves to cherish her memories her children, David (Peg) Gill of Gansevoort, NY and Mary Kate (Keith) Stoller of Arlington, VA; granddaughters Maggie and Grace Gill and Mia and Gilly Stoller; her sister Sue (George) Lauderbaugh of Jacksonville, AL and brother Jim Salisbury of Anniston, AL; former sisters-in-law Sue Kennelly (Maurice) of Toms River, NJ and Diane Salisbury of Washington, DC. Jean also leaves several beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, in addition to longtime friends who’d become family.

At Jeans request, no formal memorial service will be held. Memorial gifts can be made to any organization furthering childrens literacy or the charity of your choice. Most importantly, please carry on Jean’s spirit of graciousness.
