On Thursday, March 17, 2022, Janet Marie Slocum was called home to be with our Heavenly Father.

Janet Slocum was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 27, 1947 to Veronica Simien and Garfield McWilliams, who have since passed. Veronica and Garfield had four (4) daughters: Carol, Janet, Angela (Angie) and Deborah (Debbie). The family moved to Brooklyn New York in October of 1950, where the girls were raised by their mother and father along with loving assistance from their dear Aunt Georgia.

On August 1, 1964, Janet married Cecil Warren Maccannon Sr. From their union, they had two sons, Cecil Warren Maccannon Jr. and Keith Anthony Maccannon. Janet was very proud of her sons, and she talked about them often to just about everyone she encountered.

Janet and Cecil ultimately divorced on February 10, 1975 and continued to jointly raise Cecil and Keith over the years. Years after the divorce, Janet fell in love with Oliver Slocum Jr., who would prove to be her soulmate and the love of her life. Janet and Oliver met at the International Business Machines (IBM) company, where Oliver worked as an engineering executive and Janet had a successful career as an HR professional. Following years of dating, they were married on May 21, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York. They would go on to move to East Windsor, New Jersey and then to Warrenton, Virginia, embarking on many adventures together- traveling across the country and around the world. Janet and Oliver were happily married for eleven years before Oliver passed away on July 11, 1993. After Oliver’s passing, Janet moved back to the central New Jersey area, near to where she and Oliver had lived for several years. Years later, Janet relocated to Fredericksburg, Virginia to live much closer to her sons and their families.

Janet eventually rekindled her passion for traveling both nationally and internationally, visiting several countries and continents with her family and most recently with sister Angie. Over the years, she was able to see some of the most amazing wonders around the world.

Janet was very personable, making new friends and fans wherever she went. She was also an avid reader, regularly volunteered for charitable causes, and loved to make crafts with a special enthusiasm for Christmas. Throughout her life, she was known to be very organized and good with managing finances. Janet also loved to cook large dinners and host family holiday gatherings. Janet was also known as a true survivor and medical marvel, overcoming several illnesses and conditions throughout her life. In spite of each of these conditions, she continued to thrive and live life to the fullest.

Janet leaves three sisters, two sons and four grandchildren along with a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, close extended family, and dear friends. Her eldest son, Cecil, has three sons – Michael, Jason, and Shawn. And her youngest son, Keith, has one daughter – Kayla Maccannon. Janet was a devoted, thoughtful, and kind wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Janet was dearly loved, and she will be deeply missed.

It was October in Bordentown, NJ. I was at the street fair looking at the wares of a friendly looking lady. While looking we started to chat. This was over 20 years ago. What a beautiful friendship we developed. Janet was the type of person you could talk with about anything. I so looked forward to her visits to New Jersey. We didn’t have a lot of time, but we had quality time. She will be greatly missed. She talked about her family to the extent I could go up to them and know exactly who they are. She was so proud of all of you. I wish you all well and know that she is watching over you.
