Herbert Graves Jacob, Jr. was born in Eastville, Virginia on October 2, 1940 to his late parents, Herbert Graves and Annie Mae (Jacob) Graves and the Lord called him home on Thursday, March 14, 2019. He was the
only boy and youngest of four children including sisters Marion Butts (deceased), Annie Taylor, and Marion Sample.

As a child, his parents emphasized the importance of accepting Christ early in life, resulting in him being baptized as a member of the Union Baptist Church of Eastville, Virginia; the oldest African American Church on the Eastern Shore.

Hebert graduated from Northampton County High School in 1958 and shortly thereafter, joined the United States Army. He served a total of 28 years, which included three tours in Vietnam, and numerous overseas assignments, eventually retiring at the highest enlisted level of Sergeant Major, E9. During his distinguished military service, he received numerous medals and awards, including his 1971 Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in ground operations against hostile forces in Vietnam.

While on one of those overseas assignments, he met the love of his life, Meresseit (Ghezaie). They married on March 17, 1968 in Asmara, Ethiopia, and from that union they had two daughters; Donna and Angela.

In his pastime, he was an avid fisher and enjoyed the quite solitude of becoming one with nature. As a young man, baseball was a passion that almost landed him a minor league contract. He enjoyed watching MLB
games, the NBA and the NFL. In addition, he had an addiction to old westerns and MSNBC, which he obsessively watched on a daily basis.

Affectionately known as Junie by the family, Jake by his military buddies, Joc by his wife and Daddy by his daughters and grand-daughter, Herbert is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Meresseit Jacob (Alexandria, VA); son Herbert Noel Marchadier (France), daughters Donna Jacob, Angela Jacob and grand-daughter Zemi Jacob (Alexandria, VA); Sisters Annie Taylor and Martha Sample (Birdsnest VA); in addition to a host of other
relatives and devoted friends.

The family will receive friends at 10am, Friday, March 22, 2019 at Ebenezer AME Church, 7806 Allentown Rd. Ft. Washington, MD. A Life Celebration Service will begin at 11am. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
