Helen Augusta Mozingo, 89, was born in Alexandria, Virginia on May 16, 1933. She left this world on May 16, 2022. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Geneva Cauble, 11 siblings, husband, Joseph B. Mozingo, and daughter, Barbara A. Shanks. She leaves behind her daughter, Debbie Edmunds, granddaughters, Chasity Hinken and wife, Melanie Zinger, Kaitlyn Shanks, great grandson, Teague Shanks, and son-in-law Lee Shanks.

Helen, the youngest of her 11 siblings, was funny, innocently mischievous, generous, and kind. She was a consummate jokester and her laugh contagious. Helen was rich in spirit and gave generously to those in need. Having never met a stranger, she called them and friends alike, her signature “babes”, and often engaged in conversation with people wherever she went – most especially about her favorite sports teams, the Cowboys or Orioles.

She met her husband, Joe, while at the skating rink, and they were married for 36 years before he left this earth. They had two daughters, two granddaughters, and one great grandson. Helen affectionately doted on her grandchildren – family was everything to Helen, her love and loyalty never wavered, and all were certain of her devotion.

Helen possessed a greener than average thumb and grew luscious plants, vegetables, and flowers. She loved being outdoors whether working in her yard, fishing, or sitting on her porch – she found solace in nature.

While her family is incredibly saddened by her departure, they are full of gratitude for her impact on all whom she met and know she was looking forward to being reunited with those who preceded her.

A funeral service – a celebration of her beautiful life – will be held in her honor at 1:30p on Monday, May 23, 2022 at Cunningham Funeral Home, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA. The family requests those who attend to wear yellow, her favorite color, which is a representation of her full of light and love personality.

I remember all the great times growing together. Our trips to North Carolina. The crazy antics we played on each other. When we got together we would always laugh and giggle remembering all those fun times. You sent me down a hill on a bike that had no brakes! You showed me what a firecracker was in the pasture. You lit it, told me to run. When it blew up in my hand you said not to tell. We never told on each other. You were my aunt and best friend. You will be missed so so much. Today I have a heavy heart.
