  1. George Brownlee Payne says:

    Prayer of a Sportsman

    Dear Lord, in the battle that goes on through life
    I ask but a field that is fair,
    A chance that is equal with all in the strife,
    A courage to strive and to dare;

    And if should win, let it be by the code
    With my faith and my honor held high;
    And if I should lose, let me stand by the road,
    And cheer as the winners go by.

    And Lord, may my shouts be ungrudging and clear,
    A tribute that comes from the heart,
    And let me not cherish a snarl or a sneer
    Or play any sniveling part;

    Let me say, “There they ride, on whom laurel’s bestowed
    Since they played the game better than I.”
    Let me stand with a smile by the side of the road,
    And cheer as the winners go by.

    So grant me to conquer, if conquer I can,
    By proving my worth in the fray,
    But teach me to lose like a regular man,
    And not like a craven, I pray;

    Let me take off my hat to the warriors who strode
    To victory splendid and high,
    Yea, teach me to stand by the side of the road
    And cheer as the winners go by.

    “It has been said that the best dads get promoted to grandpas. Grandfathers are good listeners, good storytellers, and most importantly, good friends. They are always there to laugh and play with their grandkids and even console them when necessary. Grandfathers are also often the source of sage advice, a benefit of their many years of experience. One thing is for sure, the love of a grandfather is a unique treasure that is never forgotten by their grandchildren. The times spent with a grandfather turn into precious memories that are conserved in the heart.”

    I love you, Granddad! I have been so blessed to have had such a long time with you! Thank you for everything. I hope you are dancing with your beautiful bride now…tell her I miss her, too…

    In loving memory of my grandfather

    Jack, We will miss you all the times we had together especially in the VFW Family of 7327

  8. Dan & Sharon Tanna says:

    Jack , I will always remember! Your legacy lays to many manly acts of kindness. You took compassion on this pup, alive with good intentions but dull to the world’s ways.

    You taught me to flip Sunday morning’s pancakes when the batter bubbles.

    You shared a subtlety with me for starting a roaring fire in the fireplace.

    You taught me the proper knot to use to wed a fish hook to a 10lb test line.

    So all the above plus Black Label, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Sammy Baugh, VFW bus trips to Orioles, “ruthless grannies,” little potatoes, Pope’s Creek crabs, Old Glory waving in your front yard ring bells celebrating your Mensch,never to be forgotten.

    I was sorry to hear of Jack’s passing, he was a fine man and a great neighbor. Jack always did his best to ensure the kids in Beverly Forest were safe. I don’t think I ever said thank you for the time he took me to the emergency room when I got the fish hook under my thumb nail. Jack, Crystal, Ginger and George your father was a man you could always be proud of. I will keep you all in my prayers.

    God bless,
    Tom

    George – Deeply saddened to hear of your Dad’s passing. Jack was truly a “saleman’s salesman” and I saw that firsthand many, many times when I worked at Sears back in the 70s. He was also a genuinely warm, caring person, too. That came across in his interactions with customers, co-workers and even us chuckle-headed teenagers when we would stop by the house.

    One bit of wisdom he imparted to me was the importance of a smile. Can’t recall a time when I did not see him smiling.

    And no doubt about it, Jack truly rocked the sweater vest!

    RIP

    To the family of Grover Payne, Jr., please accept my belated condolence. Imagine the time when sickness and death will be a thing of the past. Isaiah 33:24; Isaiah 25:8 Imagine seeing your loved one again when God resurrects all those in the grave to a Paradise earth healing the broken hearts of those who loved them. Acts 24:15; Psalm 147:3 Soon, these imaginations will be a reality because we know that “God cannot lie.” Numbers 23:19 For more info, go to jw.org and search for Hope for the Dead and God’s Kingdom. There is nothing I can say to take the pain away, but I hope the thought of seeing Grover again brings you comfort in the days ahead.
