Douglas Layne Buckles, of Lebanon, Virginia, died peacefully at his nursing home in Alexandria, VA and went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at the age of 85. Doug was born to parents, Emmett Buckles and Alma Kiser Buckles on August 21, 1934 in Hansonville, Virginia. After attending Lebanon High School, he attended Hampden-Sydney College. He then served in the Army where he was stationed at the US Army Signal Group, Ryukyu Islands. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Doug returned to the Medical College of Virginia, where he studied Pharmacy. He resided in Richmond, Virginia until he relocated to Cedar Bluff, Virginia in 1971. Doug was a supervisor at a coal company in Kentucky until 1985. He then moved to Lebanon, where he was the proprietor of a Discount Tobacco store until he retired in the early 2000’s. He was passionate about playing his banjo, bluegrass music, his love of football and the Washington Redskins and tinkering with cars. Doug was also a PADI certified scuba diver and enjoyed diving and deep sea fishing on summer vacations in the Caribbean with his son and daughter.

He was a longtime member of Green Valley Baptist Church in Lebanon, Virginia, where he once played in a gospel group. Doug is survived by his second wife of 28 years, Glema Faye Buckles; one daughter, Terri Buckles Lahlou of Arlington, Virginia; one son, William Douglas Buckles (Kristy) of Roanoke, Virginia; two stepsons; one stepdaughter; three stepgrandchildren, four grandsons, Zachary Nathaniel Lahlou, Aidan Christopher Lahlou, Benjamin Ameen Lahlou, of Arlington, Virginia, William Tyler Buckles, of Roanoke, Virginia; one granddaughter, Avery Elizabeth Buckles, of Roanoke, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Alma Buckles. The family has entrusted Cunningham Turch Funeral Home in Alexandria, VA, with the funeral arrangements. Doug will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in several months, due to Covid-19. At that time, the family would like to have a celebration of his life.
