David Kraftt Yancey, age 80, of Alexandria & Buckingham, passed away unexpectedly due to heart complications, on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in Louisa County, VA. He was the youngest of 2 born to Thomas VanDervurse & Grace Katherine (Bender) Yancey and grew up in Alexandria.

He was very well-known in the Northern Virginia & Buckingham areas (perhaps others). He was a man of integrity, a man of his word. He was a hard worker, loved his family, friends, farming, firearms & freedom. For several years he participated in various aspects of New Orleans Mardi Gras, including riding on floats, attending banquets, assisting in the background, and more.

He retired from TJ Fannons after 45 ½ years. He delivered oil & serviced in HVAC. Before then, he worked as a mechanic, tow truck driver, volunteer first responder, and in other areas. He had a few hobbies including hunting & racing (in his younger days), etc., and usually had a story to tell for just about everything.

He leaves behind his daughter, Nadine & son-in-law Peter Grinnell; His grandson, Merlin Jason Yancey; 2 sisters-in-law, Jane (Stan) Kesler & family in Texas & Margie (Cary) Steele in Florida & their surviving son, Alan in Virginia; 2 nephews, Tom (Judy) & Sean (Bobbie) Delach & family; along with numerous cousins, friends, and loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Nelda (Wood) Yancey; his father, Thomas; his mother, Grace; his sister, Sheila Hunter, his niece Wanda Kesler; his nephew John Steele; and several aunts, uncles & cousins.

Celebration of Life Services will begin on Thursday, May 4, 2023, from 6-8pm and at 11am on Friday, May 5, 2023, at Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, located at 811 Cameron St, Alexandria, VA 22314. Graveside Service will be at 2pm at Toms Brook Cemetery in Toms Brook, VA 22660.

  5. Jim and Martha Girard says:

Our sincere condolences to David’s family, and especially to Nadine, Pete and Jason. David and Nelda were our neighbors for over 25 years and was always willing to lend a helping hand and generous with his time when it came to repairing anything. David always kept a light on in the window and we took comfort in knowing that he and Nelda were looking out for the neighbors on the street, and us for them.

David was always friendly and enjoyed sharing stories from his youth including fixing up vehicles, the adventures he had drag racing, interesting jobs when still at Fannon’s, or projects around the house. He would light up when talking about how he met Nelda, and working extra jobs to save up for their home on East Mason, but most of all, David enjoyed talking about the farm, his many friends and neighbors in Buckingham, and the nuanced capabilities of the front-loader, multiple tractors and mowers. Dave could fix anything or knew someone who could and would help.

During the time that he was still working, David would look forward to visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras and would bring our girls bags of colorful beads from the float parades and stories from his travels.

David will be missed and fondly remembered by our family.
