Carol Elizabeth “Mimi” Mahoney was born in Alexandria on August 8th, 1944. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 7th, 2020 due to congestive heart failure. She was preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Robert V. Mahoney Jr., who passed away in 1993. Carol is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Purcell, her husband Mark, along with their two children Connor Purcell and Lauren O’Malley, and a great-grandson, Mason. She is also survived by her son, Robert V. Mahoney III, his wife Shannon, and her youngest granddaughters Maeve and Fionnula. She is affectionately known to her youngest grandchildren as “Tugie”.

Carol had a unique career providing day care out of her home for 50 yrs. She absolutely loved taking care of children. “My job has brought me so much joy and laughter and not everyone can say that” she used to say. Many of the children that she took care of went on to bring their own children to daycare with “Mimi”. She had a positive impact on hundreds of families throughout the years and made it easier for parents to go to work without having to worry about their little ones. Carol was a dynamic woman who loved to make people smile. Always there with compliment out of the blue, a loving word or some story meant to make you laugh, Carol loved people and it showed to everyone she came across. A woman of great faith, she attended Mass daily when she was able and was an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. Her prayer list was long and in retirement she spent most of her day in prayer. She loved to sit outside on nice days greeting the neighbors and saying the rosary.

Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday Feb. 11, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Basilica of St. Mary’s followed by a celebration of life at the Basilica Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria.
