Alphonso James Glover was educated in the public-school system in Augusta, GA attending Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Telfair Street Elementary, A. R. Johnson Jr. High, T.W. Josey High School, and Academy of Richmond County aka Richmond Academy.
He was selected in the second group of 3 African American high school seniors in Augusta to integrate all white Richmond Academy in 1967 during the days of school desegregation in the South. He was the first African American to integrate the Basketball team. He excelled on the team and was mentioned regularly in the local sports section of the local newspaper.
Unfortunately, racism played a role while at Richmond. He was dismissed from the basketball team before the end of the season due to academic performance. He was also targeted by law enforcement for speeding on his way to school. Years later it was revealed one teacher at Richmond purposely gave him low grades on assignments in order to have him removed from the team. This also prevented he and his parents from attendance to the annual school sports banquet. It was also revealed law enforcement regularly monitored the family vehicle on days when he drove to school. He was cited 3 times for “so-called speeding” by law enforcement and was reported to the school also.
Alphonso graduated from Richmond Academy and enrolled at Tuskegee Institute. There he discovered a passion for tennis. This passion provided the opportunity for him to represent the U.S. Virgin Islands in Tennis during the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City, Mexico.
